How Facebook helped break an entire country

This excellent video, by independent journalist and youtuber Johnny Harris is a great work example of how new technologies can spread missinformation and hatred towards minorities.


At the beginning of 2017, the stage was set for a crisis that would eventually grip Myanmar and the world's attention. Tensions in the Rakhine State, Myanmar's western region, had been simmering for years, primarily rooted in the persecution and discrimination faced by the Rohingya Muslim minority. This marginalized community had long been the target of government policies that restricted their rights and subjected them to extreme hardship.


The situation escalated dramatically in August 2017 when an insurgent group known as the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) launched coordinated attacks on security forces in Rakhine State. The Myanmar military responded with a brutal crackdown, claiming they were targeting ARSA militants. The mass exodus of Rohingya refugees into Bangladesh created an urgent and devastating humanitarian catastrophe, as makeshift refugee camps in Cox's Bazar struggled to accommodate the influx. The international community began to react with condemnation, recognizing the situation as a "textbook example of ethnic cleansing." World leaders and human rights organizations called for accountability and justice for the atrocities committed against the Rohingya.


It's in this context that Facebook's role in the crisis became increasingly significant.
